Chapter 7 - THE BUTTON UNDER HER THUMB

The hearing on the emergency injunction lasted three hours.

The Mercers came prepared.

Richard’s attorney argued:

Claire had voluntarily signed.

She had longstanding anxiety.

She had recently been prescribed clonazepam.

She later regretted a valid transaction and was now reframing family concern as coercion.

Smart.

Then they played the notarization video.

Claire on camera.

Pale.

Slow.

Asked if voluntary.

“Yes.”

Judge Elaine Porter watched carefully.

Then asked:

“Where is the rest of the room?”

Attorney:

“Outside camera frame.”

Then Maya stood.

“We have audio.”

Evan went still.

Diane’s face changed.

Richard looked at his son.

Claire sat perfectly calm.

Maya played the recording.

Richard:

You won’t be in a position to.

Diane:

Drink.

Claire:

What did you put in that?

Evan:

If she complains, the doctor says she’s been confused for weeks anyway.

Then:

Good girl.

The courtroom became silent.

Richard’s attorney asked to challenge authenticity.

Expected.

Maya had forensic verification ready.

Device metadata.

Continuous timestamp.

No edits.

Then Claire’s strange signature comparison.

Then pharmacy evidence.

Then telehealth metadata.

Judge Porter issued:

temporary invalidation of the power of attorney,

freeze on land transfer,

no financial action by Evan,

preservation orders for devices and medical records.

Then she said:

“This court is deeply concerned.”

Not a finding yet.

Enough.

Outside the courtroom, Diane approached Claire.

“You vindictive little bitch.”

Maya stepped between them.

Claire said:

“Say it louder.”

Diane stopped.

Recording culture had changed everyone.

Then Richard told reporters there had been a “private family misunderstanding involving medication.”

Claire’s attorney released nothing.

Not yet.

Then law enforcement opened a criminal investigation after the judge referred evidence.

The Mercers were no longer fighting only Claire.

They were fighting:

forgery,

coercion,

fraud,

unlawful administration of medication,

and potential financial exploitation.

Then Dr. Marcus Bell hired his own lawyer.

That was when everyone knew he was scared.
