Chapter 13 - THE MOTHER WHO SAID SHE WAS SAVING THE HOUSE
Martha accepted a plea before trial finished.
Why?
Because Ethan would otherwise testify.
Her attorney told her the state could call him.
Martha finally stopped.
At the plea hearing, the judge asked:
“Why did you use the trust funds?”
Martha cried.
“To save our home.”
“Whose home?”
“My son’s.”
“Did Ethan ask you to do that?”
“No.”
“Did the trust authorize ordinary mortgage payments?”
“No.”
“Did you fabricate medical documentation?”
Long silence.
“Yes.”
Then:
“Did you keep Ethan in medical devices he did not need?”
Martha closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“So the records would make sense.”
That was the sentence.
Not:
to hurt him.
To make the records make sense.
Reality had to be bent until it matched fraud.
Then the judge asked:
“Did you understand that your son was in pain?”
Martha whispered:
“Yes.”
Sarah sat in the back row.

Only relief that the denial had stopped.
