Chapter 2 - DON'T OPEN IT

Sarah brought the cast saw toward the bed.

Martha stepped in front of her.

Sarah pointed at Ethan’s swollen fingers.

“This cast comes off.”

Martha grabbed Sarah’s wrist and shoved the saw away.

Clara moved instantly.

“Martha, step back.”

She pulled her away.

Ethan stared at his mother.

Terrified.

Martha shouted:

“Leave it alone!”

Sarah returned to Ethan.

“Hold still.”

The saw came on.

Ethan squeezed his eyes shut.

“Please take it off.”

Martha went pale.

Not angry now.

Afraid.

Sarah lowered the blade toward the filthy cast.

Martha broke free.

Lunged across the bed.

Grabbed Sarah’s arm with both hands.

“DON’T OPEN IT!”

Everything stopped.

Clara caught Martha again.

Sarah switched off the saw.

She looked at her.

“What is under this cast?”

Martha said nothing.

Sarah’s voice became colder.

“What are you afraid I’m going to find?”

Martha’s face changed.

Then she forced a laugh.

“You doctors always think the worst.”

Sarah looked at Ethan.

He was crying silently.

Then he whispered:

“She said it has to stay on.”

Sarah crouched beside him.

“Who said?”

Ethan looked at Martha.

Then:

“Mom.”

Martha snapped:

“He doesn’t understand.”

Sarah stood.

“Clara, call social work.”

Martha shouted:

“No.”

Then:

“You have no right!”

Sarah answered:

“I have a child with a potentially dangerous cast, inconsistent history, and a parent physically interfering with necessary treatment.”

Martha’s eyes filled.

“You’ll ruin everything.”

Sarah paused.

“Everything what?”

No answer.

Then Ethan whispered:

“The money.”

Sarah did not react dramatically.

She knew adults often contaminated child statements by showing too much surprise.

So she asked:

“What money?”

Ethan stared at the blanket.

“Dad’s money.”

Martha shouted from behind Clara:

“He doesn’t know what he’s talking about!”

Sarah looked at Clara.

Clara nodded once.

Security was already coming.

Then Ethan said:

“Mom says if I’m not sick, we lose the house.”

That sentence changed the room.

Not because Sarah suddenly knew the whole truth.

Because Ethan had connected:

illness,

money,

and housing.

Those concepts did not belong together naturally in an eight-year-old’s mind.

Someone had put them there.

Then Ethan whispered:

“The money.”

Martha froze.

Sarah slowly looked back at him.

“What money?”

Ethan immediately covered his mouth.

Martha lunged again.

This time security entered.

And Sarah knew the cast was only the beginning.
