Chapter 9 - THE KEY INSIDE THE CAST
The small key found inside the cast opened a safe-deposit box.
Martha denied knowing it.
Records showed she rented the box.
Inside:
cash.
$96,000.
Also:
blank trust forms,
signature stamps,
copies of physician letterhead,
and Michael’s old laptop.
Then the real surprise.
The laptop also contained a draft email Michael never sent to Martha.
Martha—
We need to stop talking about Ethan’s trust as if it belongs to us. It doesn’t.
No accusation.
No legal threat.
Just boundary.
The message had been saved but not sent.
Detective Morris asked whether Michael and Martha had fought about money before his death.
Claire said yes.
Not constantly.
But enough.
Michael was generous with shared money and rigid about Ethan’s trust.
Martha considered that insulting.
“She used to say he trusted bankers more than his wife.”
That resentment survived him.
When he died, the person enforcing the boundary disappeared.
Then Ruth died too.
Martha was left facing the same locked pool of money with no family member she respected standing between her and it.
Then the real surprise.
Michael had left a private spreadsheet on the laptop.
Not fraud.
Warnings.
He had tracked Martha’s access to household accounts during the last year of his life.
One note:
Martha keeps treating Ethan’s trust as backup family capital. Must tighten distribution rules.
Another:
If anything happens to me, Claire should become trust protector after Mom.
But that change had never been finalized.
Draft only.
Then an email to his attorney:
Need to make sure medical distributions are verified directly with provider, not through parent.
He saw the risk.
Before he could update the trust, he died.
Martha had known about the draft.
She deleted it from the home computer.
But the safe-deposit copy remained.
Why keep it?
Because people often preserve the documents they hate when they think they might someday need to know what someone else knew.
Then Ethan explained the key.
Martha taped it inside the cast the morning of the ER visit.
Why?
She had received notice that First Commonwealth wanted an in-person trust review.
She planned to move the safe-deposit contents.
But Ethan’s hand became swollen before she could.
She hid the key in the one place she believed nobody would open.
