Chapter 7 - THE PHOTOGRAPHS
Martha documented everything.
That was her mistake.
Her phone contained hundreds of photographs of Ethan wearing:
arm casts,
ankle braces,
a neck collar,
crutches,
hospital-style wristbands.
Many were props.
Some were purchased online.
Some had been reused.
The backgrounds changed:
living room,
bedroom,
clinic waiting room,
parking garage.
Then Detective Morris found repeated sequences.
Before photo:
Ethan smiling normally.
Next:
brace applied.
Next:
Martha positioning his face.
Next:
Ethan looking sad.
Then claim submission.
The photos had been used as supporting evidence to trust administrators.
Martha had learned presentation.
One photograph rarely showed Ethan alone.
There would be:
a thermometer,
a brace,
a bottle of children’s pain reliever,
a folded blanket,
sometimes a school worksheet.
Context.
Everything designed to imply a long recovery.
She captioned files:
BAD NIGHT.
CAN’T BEAR WEIGHT.
STILL IN PAIN.
MISSED SCHOOL AGAIN.
The trust office had no medical training.
But the images made the claims feel human.
That was why they worked.
Numbers ask for scrutiny.
A photograph of a tired child asks for sympathy.
Martha weaponized the second to bypass the first.
The photos had been used as supporting evidence to trust administrators.
Not medically required.
Emotionally persuasive.
Then one video.
Martha coaching Ethan.
“Say it hurts when you move.”
Ethan:
“But it doesn’t.”
Martha:
“Ethan.”
He immediately changes expression.
“It hurts.”
Sarah watched once.
Then stopped.
She had seen parents exaggerate symptoms.
This was training.
Then there was a more disturbing clip.
Martha placing the dirty cast on Ethan’s arm two weeks earlier.
Not six weeks.
The cast was pre-aged.
Sanded.
Stained.
Wrapped over padding.
Why make it look old?
Because the trust had already paid a claim for a fracture supposedly diagnosed six weeks earlier.
If anyone saw Ethan, the visible timeline had to match the paperwork.
The cast was costume evidence.
Ethan’s pain came because Martha tightened it repeatedly after it loosened.
Not to injure him deliberately.
