Chapter 6 - THE AUNT MARTHA KEPT AWAY
Claire Harris had not seen Ethan in eight months.
Not by choice.
She had called.
Sent birthday gifts.
Asked to visit.
Martha refused.
Reason:
Ethan was “too medically fragile.”
Claire believed her at first.
Then became suspicious when Martha canceled Christmas because Ethan supposedly needed surgery.
No surgery occurred in any hospital Claire could locate.
She confronted Martha.
Martha threatened a restraining order.
Then accused Claire of trying to gain access to Ethan’s trust.
That shut Claire down temporarily.
Nobody wants to look like a relative circling a child’s inheritance.
Then Claire received one strange voicemail from Ethan.
She replayed it dozens of times.
The strange part was not what he said.
It was what happened at the end.
After:
“Bye.”
Ethan did not hang up immediately.
For three seconds, the line stayed open.
Martha’s voice:
“Good. See? That wasn’t hard.”
Then click.
Claire had saved that too.
At the time, she interpreted it as a mother coaching a shy child.
Now it sounded different.
Controlled script.
Approved message.
Then silence.
When Detective Morris heard it, she added the file to evidence.
Claire cried.
“I should’ve known.”
Denise answered:
“You noticed enough to keep it.”
That mattered.
Then Claire received one strange voicemail from Ethan.
Four months before the ER visit.
“Hi Aunt Claire. I’m okay. Mom says I can’t talk because my arm is broken again. Bye.”
Again.
Claire knew of no first break.
She saved the voicemail.
Then another message, not from Ethan.
Martha:
Stop confusing him. He needs stability.
Claire hired an attorney.
Quietly.
Asked for a welfare check.
Martha produced:
medical letters,
trust documentation,
photos of Ethan in casts and braces,
school absence notes.
Everything looked organized.
The welfare officer left.
Claire felt ashamed for suspecting her.
Now she arrived at the hospital crying.
Ethan saw her.
Then burst into tears.
“Aunt Claire!”
He reached with both arms.
No cast.
Martha, watching through the glass from a supervised room, looked terrified.
