Chapter 15 - THE NEW DINNER

The first dinner in Margaret’s townhouse happened almost one year after the spit incident.
Rachel almost declined.
Then went.
Mason was thirteen now.
Taller.
Quieter.
He carried Rachel’s plate from the kitchen.
Set it down carefully.
Then sat across from her.
Nobody joked.
Derek seemed uncomfortable.
Good.
Lauren changed the subject whenever money came up.
Eric had repaid more than half of what he promised Margaret.
Not perfect.
Real.
Margaret served roast chicken.
Then looked at Rachel.
“I still miss the old house.”
Rachel nodded.
“I know.”
“I was angry at you for stopping the payments.”
“I know.”
Margaret folded her napkin.
“You were right.”
Rachel did not smile.
“About what?”
“I kept calling it help because I didn’t want to admit it had become dependence.”
That was enough.
Then Mason spoke.
“Aunt Rachel?”
She looked at him.
“I’m sorry.”
“You already apologized.”
“I know.”
He looked at his plate.
“I mean for thinking it was funny.”
Rachel nodded.
“Thank you.”
No speech.
No revenge.
No public humiliation in return.
Dinner continued.
Halfway through dessert, Rachel’s phone buzzed.
Bank alert.
Annual property tax payment processed.
For Margaret’s townhouse.
Rachel had chosen to pay it that year.
Not because anyone demanded it.
Not because they laughed less.
Not because she needed gratitude.
Because she had decided what help looked like when it was actually hers to give.
She locked the phone.
Mason passed her the pie.
“Want some?”
Rachel looked at him.
Then at the clean plate in front of her.
“Yes.”
He served her a slice.
No one laughed.

And for the first time in a long time, Rachel did not wonder what dinner was going to cost her.
