Chapter 6 - THE TWO DRUMS

CER’s site manager, Marcus Lee, remembered the missing drums.

He said they were empty.

Fire-damaged.

Too warped for standard transport.

Ryan told the crew to move them behind an equipment shed until a scrap contractor arrived.

Possible.

Then Thomas Keller’s inspection photos surfaced.

No drums behind the shed.

Scrap contractor records:

none received.

Where did they go?

Ryan said:

“I don’t know.”

Grace asked:

“Who would?”

“Everett’s people.”

Martin Everett denied knowledge.

His attorney produced surveillance footage from the mill’s outer gate.

The footage was incomplete.

Fire damaged part of the system.

But at 5:52 a.m. on the morning Lili passed the property, a Carter Environmental Response box truck entered.

At 6:07, it left.

Driver identity unclear.

Ryan looked at the still image.

“That truck was not scheduled.”

“Whose truck?”

“Ours.”

“Who had keys?”

“Several supervisors.”

Then Grace froze the image.

The passenger-side door carried a scratch in the company logo.

Lili recognized it.

Ryan drove that specific truck sometimes.

She had ridden in it two months earlier.

“Ryan.”

He looked at her.

“No.”

“You were there.”

“No.”

“Then who was driving your truck?”

Ryan stopped speaking.

Lauren stepped in.

“My client will answer after we review fleet logs.”

Again, smart.

Again, delay.
