Chapter 1 - LET THEM GO

Lili Carter heard the motorcycles before she saw the men.
She had been running the same forest trail for six years.
Three miles out.
Turn near the narrow road.
Back before breakfast.
Nothing about the morning felt unusual until Trent stepped off the road and blocked the trail.
Jake came from behind a parked motorcycle.
Cole moved behind Lili.
Three men.
One exit.
Trent pointed at her phone.
“PHONE. WATCH. NOW!”
Jake reached toward the gold necklace at her throat.
Lili slapped his hand away.
Jake grabbed her wrist.
She ripped free and shoved him backward.
“BACK OFF.”
Trent charged.
Lili sidestepped, caught his arm, used his momentum, and threw him into the leaves.
Cole rushed from the side.
She knocked his arms away, swept his balance, and drove him down beside Trent.
Jake turned to run.
Lili grabbed his jacket and yanked him backward.
“LET GO!”
She forced him down with the others.
All three stared at her.
Not angry anymore.
Afraid.
Then the engine came.
A black SUV roared along the narrow road and braked hard beside them.
Lili released Jake and turned.
The rear window lowered.
A man sat inside.
Shadowed.
Face hidden.
He pointed toward Trent, Jake, and Cole.
“LET THEM GO.”
The three men looked relieved.
That was what bothered Lili.
Not the SUV.
Not the command.
Their relief.
They knew him.
Or thought they did.
Lili planted her feet.
“Who are you?”
The man ignored the question.
“Take your phone and leave.”
Trent suddenly shouted:
“She still has the watch!”
The man in the SUV turned his head toward him.
Slowly.
“Shut up.”
Lili looked down at the sports watch on her wrist.
Then back at the SUV.
The window started rising.
She called:
“What’s on my watch?”
The man answered before the glass closed.
“Something somebody is willing to pay three men to erase.”
Then the SUV pulled away.
Police also recovered one of Jake’s gloves near the trail.
Inside the cuff was a folded receipt from a gas station twenty miles away.
Time:
5:48 a.m.
Items:
coffee,
energy drink,
two prepaid phone cards.
Grace asked:
“Why does this matter?”
Detective Ruiz answered:
“Because somebody bought disposable numbers before they approached you.”
Security video showed Trent and Jake together.
Cole arrived separately.
No SUV.
No Ryan.
That kept the chain incomplete.
Then investigators checked tower data.
One prepaid phone activated at 5:56.
First outgoing call:
to Ryan Carter.
Duration:
eighteen seconds.
Second call:
to an unknown prepaid number.
That second number later contacted Nathan Hale’s investigative target list.
Grace said:
“We still do not know who coordinated the three men on the ground.”
Lili asked:
“What do you mean? Ryan hired them.”
“He may have. Or Ryan hired one person, who hired others.”
The distinction mattered.
If investigators rushed, every assumption about the forest confrontation could infect the larger case.
Lili wanted the answer immediately.
Ruiz said:
May you like
“You already survived the urgent part. Now we do the slow part.”
She hated him for being right.
