Chapter 12 - THE ZOO AGAIN

Mason returned to Brookfield Wildlife Park.
Why?
Because grief pulls people toward places where plans broke.
Or because he had hidden something there.
Ryan predicted the second.
Zoo security found a backpack behind an old donor pavilion.
Inside:
Caleb’s files,
wallet addresses,
copies of Vale correspondence.
Mason came for it after dark.
Ryan waited.
No dramatic tiger attack.
No absurd chase through cages.
The zoo closed public areas and kept all animals secured normally.
Mason entered through a maintenance fence.
Reached the pavilion.
Ryan stepped out.
“Don’t.”
Mason froze.
Police surrounded the area.
Then a low roar echoed from the tiger habitat in the distance.
Mason actually laughed.
“Of course.”
Ryan said:
“Leo’s fine.”
Mason looked down.
“I know.”
“You don't get credit for that.”
“I know.”
Ryan showed him the printed draft email from Caleb.
Mason stared.
“You made that up.”
“Digital forensics didn't.”
Mason read.
His face collapsed.
Caleb had written:
I chose to keep investing after I knew better. Don’t turn this into some revenge thing if it goes bad.
Mason sat on the ground.
For months he had treated his brother’s death as instruction.
It had not been.
Then Mason whispered:
“He still stole.”
“Maybe.”
“He ruined people.”
“Then help prove it.”
Mason looked at the backpack.
Then at the officers.
“And I go to prison.”
Ryan answered:
“You kidnapped a child.”
No softening.
May you like
Mason nodded.
Then surrendered.
