Chapter 14 - ATLAS

Months passed before Emma brought Leo back to the tiger building.
She almost never did.
Not because Atlas frightened her.
Because the place carried too much.
Leo remembered less than adults.
At two, memory was strange.
He knew:
van.
White car.
Kitty.
Mommy crying.
Maybe those memories would fade.
Maybe not.
Emma did not force him.
One Saturday, Leo pointed at her zoo badge.
“Kitty?”
She asked:
“You want to see Atlas?”
“Kitty.”
They went.
Daniel came too.
Their marriage had not magically repaired.
They were in counseling.
Daniel had learned one ugly truth about himself.
He confused secrecy with protection.
Emma had learned another.
She sometimes punished him by withholding emotion after he finally told the truth.
Both had work.
At the glass, Atlas was across the habitat.
Leo slapped one hand against it.
“Kitty!”
The tiger’s head turned.
Then he walked closer.
Not because destiny.
Because familiar voice.
Maybe familiar scent.
Maybe routine.
Atlas stopped several feet from the glass this time.
Sat.
Leo laughed.
“Hee-hee!”
Emma cried quietly.
Daniel touched her shoulder.
She allowed it.
Then a family nearby recognized Leo.
“Is that the tiger baby?”
Emma turned.
“No.”
The woman looked embarrassed.
Emma softened.
“His name is Leo.”
Important.
Not Tiger Baby.
Not Lucky Kid.
A child.
The woman smiled.
“Hi, Leo.”
Leo waved.
“Hi!”
Then Atlas yawned dramatically.
Leo copied him.
Everyone laughed.

The moment became ordinary.
Exactly what Emma wanted.
