Chapter 9 - LEO'S LITTLE CLUE

Leo returned home under police protection.
He behaved almost normally.
That frightened Emma more than crying might have.
He played.
Ate.
Slept badly.
Then woke saying:
“White car.”
Emma froze.
“What?”
“White car.”
The kidnappers’ van had been black.
Daniel called Ryan.
Ryan came over.
They did not interrogate Leo.
Too young.
Instead Emma played with toy cars.
Black car.
Blue car.
White car.
Leo grabbed white.
“Man.”
Ryan watched.
Then Leo pointed toward his tiny sneaker.
“Sticky.”
There was dried adhesive on the sole.
Forensics had already bagged his clothing after rescue.
The sneaker showed:
white vinyl residue,
industrial adhesive,
tiny blue fibers.
Not from the black van interior.
Maybe from a second vehicle.
Kyle had said they planned to transfer Owen to another vehicle.
Leo may have briefly touched it at the zoo staging area.
Parking footage showed a white service van parked nearby.
Registered to:
BrightLine Event Rentals.
A shell company.
Address:
warehouse district.
Ryan smiled.
Toddlers do not solve crimes.
They notice things.
Adults decide whether to listen.
Police obtained a warrant.
The warehouse contained:
phones,
temporary plates,
restraints,
Vale surveillance photos,
maps.
Mason was gone.
Then one wall showed something unexpected.
Photographs of Spencer.
Owen.
Vale offices.
And Daniel.
Emma stared when Ryan showed her.
“Why Daniel?”
Because Mason knew Spencer hired him.
And believed Daniel had copied the wallet credentials.
Was that possible?
Daniel looked at Ryan.
Then Emma.
“Yes.”
Silence.
He had created an emergency encrypted backup during the security review.
Spencer instructed him to destroy it.
Daniel had not.
Why?
“Because I didn’t trust him.”
Emma stared.
“So you kept access to nine million dollars?”
“No. A recovery key fragment.”
Enough to matter.
May you like
Mason knew.
Now Daniel—not Owen—was the leverage.
