Ethan moved out of Margaret’s house.
Not with Claire.
Important.
He rented a one-bedroom apartment near his office.
Claire rented her own place.
Separation.
Real.
No instant reconciliation.
Ethan sold one luxury car.
Closed a private club membership.
Moved his office into a smaller suite.
Margaret called it theatrical.
It was not.
He needed liquidity.
Then one lender agreed to restructure a project loan because Ethan disclosed the problem early.
Another lender did not.
They demanded additional equity Ethan did not have.
Margaret offered it.
Condition:
Ethan return to Bennett Capital offices and restore her approval rights over all major spending.
Ethan almost accepted.
Then called Claire.
Not for permission.
To say it out loud.
“If I take it, nothing changes.”
Claire answered:
“Then you know the answer.”
He declined.
The project later failed.
That failure cost him real money.
It also became the first disaster Margaret did not rescue him from.
He learned he could survive one.
