Chapter 14 - MARGARET WITHOUT AN AUDIENCE

After the divorce, Margaret’s world did not collapse.

She remained wealthy.

Still controlled Bennett Capital.

Still lived in the house.

Still had pearl earrings and perfect teacup handles.

But Ethan stopped living through her.

That changed more than money.

He visited.

On schedules.

Left when she insulted him.

At first Margaret escalated.

“You’re weak.”

Ethan stood.

“I’ll come back next week.”

Then left.

No shouting.

No punishment.

Just boundary.

Three months later, Margaret said:

“I don’t understand what happened to you.”

Ethan answered:

“I stopped confusing fear with respect.”

She did not speak to him for a month.

Then called.

“Dinner Sunday?”

He asked:

“Are you going to insult Claire?”

Margaret paused.

“She’s not coming.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Long silence.

“No.”

He went.

Progress?

Maybe.

May you like

Not transformation.

Enough for one dinner.
