Why did Margaret care so much about Claire?
Not jealousy.
Not simply control.
Claire had access to information.
For four years, she helped Ethan with development presentations, contractor selections, and design budgets.
She knew:
which projects were overleveraged,
which family entities cross-guaranteed debt,
where Ethan used short-term loans to cover long-term problems.
Margaret feared divorce discovery.
If Claire and Ethan litigated aggressively, financial records could expose weaknesses across Bennett Capital.
Not necessarily crimes.
But leverage.
Bank covenants.
Related-party loans.
Valuations.
Margaret wanted a quiet divorce.
Fast.
Private.
Cheap.
A volatile Claire could be pressured into settlement by threatening family support and reputation.
A calm Claire with independent counsel was dangerous.
That was why Margaret escalated.
She needed Claire angry.
Then Maya found an email.
MARGARET TO ETHAN:
If she feels humiliated enough, she’ll either leave voluntarily or explode. Both are cleaner than negotiation.
Ethan replied:
Mom, stop.
Margaret:
Then handle your wife.
No further reply.
Claire stared.
“He told her stop.”
Maya nodded.
“And then did nothing.”
That difference mattered.
