Chapter 12 - THE HOUSEKEEPER'S TESTIMONY
Ana Ruiz became the witness Margaret had underestimated.
Not because she hated Margaret.
She had worked for the family nine years.
Margaret paid well.
Helped Ana’s son with tuition once.
Sent flowers when Ana’s mother died.
People are complicated.
Ana testified that Margaret had begun staging household “corrections” more aggressively after learning Ethan consulted a divorce attorney.
She heard:
“Claire needs to show her real temperament.”
Another time:
“Leave the table as is. I want to see if she notices.”
Meaning some imperfections Margaret later blamed on Claire had been created intentionally.
Then one morning Ana saw Margaret move Claire’s slippers from the mudroom to the breakfast area before criticizing them.
Ridiculous.
Also revealing.
The humiliations were not spontaneous personality clashes.
Some were tests.
Performance setups.
Then Margaret’s lawyer attacked Ana.
Salary.
Tuition help.
Possible resentment.
Fair.
Ana answered:
“Mrs. Bennett was very good to my family.”
Then:
“She was also doing this.”

That credibility mattered.
Truth did not require Margaret to be cruel every second.
