Chapter 11 - CLAIRE CHOOSES NEITHER OF THEM
Daniel was arrested after Margaret gave a statement.
Charges:
attempted murder? Could be. We can include attempted murder in story but no graphic detail. Also insurance fraud attempt, forgery-related offenses.
His defense attacked Margaret.
She staged a trap.
She carried a hidden recorder.
She disappeared voluntarily.
She manipulated Claire.
She had financial control over family members.
Some true.
Then Claire did something neither expected.
She refused to move from one controller to another.
Margaret offered:
guesthouse,
driver,
security,
private staff.
Claire said no.
Daniel’s attorney offered:
joint-account access if she signed a temporary cooperation agreement.
Claire said no.
Helen offered to coordinate all legal matters through Margaret’s office.
Claire said:
“Also no.”
Then hired Maya Sloan, a family and financial-litigation attorney with no connection to Cole Maritime.
Maya’s first instruction:
“Stop signing anything.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“That seems to be a family problem.”
Then Claire did something neither expected.
She moved out.
Not into Margaret’s house.
Into her own apartment.
Margaret said:
“You should stay with me.”
“No.”
“Claire.”
“You didn’t trust me enough to tell me you were alive.”
“I was protecting evidence.”
“You were also deciding for me.”
Margaret stopped.
Then Daniel called from jail through counsel.
“Your mother did this to destroy us.”
Claire answered:
“You pushed her off a yacht.”
“I panicked.”
“You said five million.”
“That wasn’t what it sounds like.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Every person wanted her to become part of their version.
She refused.
She hired her own attorney.
Separated finances.
Froze joint accounts where appropriate.
Requested independent forensic review.
For the first time, Claire stopped being:
daughter,
wife,
beneficiary.
And became a person with counsel.
The management agreement also contained a termination fee.
If Claire removed Daniel without cause during the first year:
$1.8 million.
Maya laughed when she saw it.
“He planned to get paid for being fired.”
Claire did not laugh.
Because the clause revealed something deeper.
Daniel did not need Claire to love him forever.
He needed her to be confused long enough.
Ninety days of control.
One year of contract protection.
A termination fee.
Then even removal became profitable.
That was how Daniel thought.
Every relationship contained an exit value.
Every crisis could be structured.
Every person could be converted into leverage.
Five million dollars was dramatic.
But the management contract was more Daniel.
