Chapter 12 - THE FIVE MILLION WASN'T THE REAL PRIZE

The insurance policy was not Daniel’s biggest motive.
That surprised everyone.
Five million sounded dramatic.
But Carter? Hayes. Cole family trust. Margaret’s estate was worth far more.
Daniel’s forged continuity documents did something more important.
If Margaret died while certain trust amendments were pending, Daniel could become temporary manager of Cole Family Continuity LLC.
That LLC held voting proxies over:
two commercial properties,
a marina-services company,
and a private credit fund.
Temporary control could allow:
refinancing,
management fees,
related-party contracts.
Not ownership.
Access.
Daniel’s consulting company had already drafted:
management agreement,
$900,000 annual fee,
transaction bonuses.
There.
The policy money was liquidity.
The real prize was control.
Then investigators found emails.
DANIEL:
If Margaret is gone, Claire won’t know how to run any of this.
ASSOCIATE:
Would Claire inherit authority?
DANIEL:
Eventually. I’ll manage transition.
Then:
She trusts me.
Claire read that line twice.
That was motive.
Not hatred.

Confidence.
He believed Claire’s trust was an asset he could use.
