Chapter 6 - MARGARET'S TEST

Margaret had left more than legal instructions.

Thomas Reed received a sealed digital folder twenty-four hours after her disappearance.

Automated release.

Inside:

emails,

policy drafts,

screenshots,

audio notes.

Margaret speaking.

“If you’re hearing this, something happened.”

Thomas listened alone first.

Then with Helen.

Margaret described Daniel’s attempted beneficiary change.

Then said:

“I do not know whether he intends fraud, pressure, or merely control. Do not accuse him beyond the evidence.”

That line mattered.

Even suspicious, Margaret remained precise.

Then:

“I’m going on the yacht because Daniel requested a private conversation about the trust.”

Helen closed her eyes.

Then Margaret added:

“If I cancel, I learn nothing.”

Risky.

Maybe foolish.

Then the final note:

“I have not told Claire. She will defend him until she sees facts.”

Claire cried when she heard it.

Not because her mother was cruel.

Because she was right.

Then Thomas asked:

“Did Margaret expect violence?”

Helen answered:

“No.”

“She expected manipulation?”

“Yes.”

“Financial?”

“Yes.”

That distinction mattered.

Margaret had set a test.

Daniel may have escalated it into attempted murder.

Or something else.

They still needed proof.

The life jacket raised another question.

Why was Margaret not wearing it when she fell?

Because she had been on deck under normal conditions.

No rough sea.

No storm.

No safety alarm.

The jacket found later came from an emergency locker near the utility skiff’s pier.

Jonah Reed eventually explained:

“When I pulled her aboard, she was shaking. I gave her the jacket because she was cold and because it had a beacon pocket.”

Margaret activated the beacon herself.

Then turned it off.

Why only eleven seconds?

She feared Daniel could monitor vessel emergency frequencies or shared family tracking.

Was that fear rational?

Maybe partly.

But it also showed what shock had done.

Margaret had spent years trusting systems.

After the fall, she trusted almost nobody.

Even survival can make judgment narrower.

That would matter when Claire later confronted her.
