Chapter 5 - THE BENEFICIARY
Claire learned about the beneficiary changes from Helen Ward.
Her mother’s attorney.
Helen invited Claire alone.
Daniel objected.
Claire went anyway.
Helen explained:
original trust beneficiary.
revised LLC.
Daniel manager.
forged authorization.
Margaret’s quiet reversal.
Claire stared.
“My husband forged her signature?”
“We don’t know who did.”
“Who benefited?”
Helen paused.
“Indirectly, Daniel had control.”
That was enough emotionally.
Not legally.
Claire called Daniel.
“Why is your company on Mom’s insurance file?”
Silence.
Then:
“It’s not my company.”
“You manage it.”
“Administrative only.”
“Did you know?”
“Yes.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
Daniel continued quickly:
“Your mother asked me to structure continuity.”
Helen shook her head from across the desk.
Claire said:
“She says she didn’t.”
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“Helen doesn’t know every conversation.”
Then:
“Claire, your mother was getting paranoid.”
There.
A new story.
Not:
forged.
Paranoid.
Claire remembered Margaret questioning Daniel recently.
She had thought it was ordinary tension.
Now Daniel reframed it.
“She kept changing documents.”
“She accused people.”
“She thought everyone wanted her money.”
Claire listened.
Then asked:
“Did she think you wanted her money?”
