Chapter 3 - NOT SO FAST

The search lasted hours.

No Margaret.

No body.

No life jacket.

No clear witness except Daniel.

Claire collapsed at the marina.

Daniel held her.

Then insurance paperwork started almost immediately.

That was the first thing Thomas Reed noticed.

Daniel contacted the insurer before the Coast Guard search had formally ended.

Not necessarily criminal.

But fast.

He asked:

claim timeline,

presumption requirements,

temporary beneficiary process,

emergency access to business-continuity funds.

Thomas reviewed the inquiry.

Then saw the policy history.

Five-million-dollar coverage.

Recent beneficiary amendment attempt.

Claim-management authorization naming Daniel.

Then last-minute beneficiary reversal by Margaret.

Interesting.

He requested an in-person claim statement.

Daniel arrived in a dark suit.

Confident.

Claire came too.

Exhausted.

Daniel signed:

date,

location,

circumstances.

Before his pen reached the final declaration, Thomas stopped it with one hand.

“Not so fast.”

Daniel looked up.

Thomas placed photographs on the table.

Damaged railing.

Broken mounting bolt.

A close-up of a pearl clasp recovered from the deck drain.

Daniel went pale.

Thomas said:

“You’ll get the money…”

Daniel’s eyes shifted.

Hope.

Then Thomas leaned closer.

“…if this was really an accident.”

Claire stared at Daniel.

“What does he mean?”

Daniel recovered.

“It means investigators do their job.”

Thomas nodded.

“Exactly.”

Then he pulled out one more photograph.

The yacht’s starboard camera.

Lens housing.

Scratched.

Wire cut.

Claire looked at Daniel.

“Why was the camera cut?”

Daniel answered:

“I don’t know.”

Thomas said:

“That’s why we’re not signing yet.”

The yacht itself became a witness.

Not because boats remember.

Because systems do.

Engine logs showed speed changes.

Navigation recorded course.

Bilge sensors recorded vibration.

Door sensors recorded movement between interior compartments.

At 2:11 p.m., Daniel opened the starboard equipment locker.

At 2:13, the side camera stopped.

At 2:16, he returned inside for less than a minute.

At 2:18, Margaret came onto the deck.

At 2:24, Claire’s phone call began below deck.

At 2:26, emergency movement registered near the railing.

No single entry proved murder.

Together, they narrowed the window.

Thomas loved narrow windows.

Stories become harder to manipulate when time has edges.
