Chapter 1 - TAKE HER

Lily Harper was five years old when her grandmother tried to hand her to the police like a problem someone else should carry away.
The front door stood open.
Blue lights flashed across the living-room walls from two cruisers in the driveway.
Officer Daniels had barely stepped onto the porch when Evelyn grabbed Lily by both arms.
Lily screamed.
“No! Mommy!”
She twisted backward, bare feet sliding against the hardwood floor.
Evelyn forced her toward the doorway.
“Stop it.”
Lily reached for the doorframe.
Evelyn pried her fingers loose.
Then shoved her forward.
Officer Daniels caught the child before she stumbled off the threshold.
Lily immediately tried to pull away from him.
Evelyn pointed at her.
“Take her. She’s out of control.”
Melissa stood beside the couch.
Arms folded.
Expression smug.
Officer Daniels crouched.
“Hey. Nobody’s taking you anywhere right now.”
Lily shook her head violently.
Then the front door flew wider.
Natalie Harper rushed in.
She had just gotten home from a two-day work trip.
She saw:
police,
her crying daughter,
her mother,
her sister.
And stopped breathing.
Lily broke from Officer Daniels.
“MOMMY!”
Natalie caught her.
Lifted her.
Held her so tightly Lily buried her face against her shoulder.
“DON’T LET THEM TAKE ME!”
Natalie looked at Evelyn.
“What did you do?”
Evelyn shrugged.
“She needed a lesson.”
Something changed in Natalie’s face.
The panic disappeared.
She set Lily behind her.
Then reached into her bag.
A thick folder came out.
Printed photographs.
Screenshots.
Dates.
Notes.
Copies of messages.
Melissa’s smile disappeared.
“What is that?”
Natalie turned toward Officer Daniels.
Then slammed the folder into his hands.
Loose papers spread across his notepad.
“Evidence of child abuse.”
Officer Daniels looked down.
May you like
Then sharply toward Evelyn.
For the first time that evening, Evelyn looked uncertain.
