Chapter 13 - MELISSA TESTIFIES

Melissa gave a statement.

Not to destroy Evelyn.

To reduce her own responsibility.

She admitted:

helping document Lily’s tantrums,

supporting police calls,

telling Natalie the behavior was worse than it was.

Why?

Because she believed Natalie was blocking a good land deal out of spite.

And because she wanted the $28,000 fee.

Small compared to the land.

Large enough to corrupt judgment.

Melissa said:

“I convinced myself scaring Lily wasn’t hurting her.”

Natalie answered:

“She was five.”

Melissa looked down.

“I know.”

Their relationship did not recover quickly.

Maybe never fully.
