Chapter 3 - THE FOLDER NATALIE HAD BEEN BUILDING

Natalie had started the evidence folder six weeks earlier.
At first she felt ridiculous.
Her therapist had told her:
“Write down what happens. Dates help when memories get emotional.”
So Natalie wrote.
March 4:
Lily locked in laundry room for ten minutes after refusing vegetables.
March 17:
Evelyn forced Lily to stand facing wall during family dinner.
April 2:
Melissa threatened to call police if Lily “talked back.”
April 19:
Lily returned from Evelyn’s house with bruising on upper arm. Lily said Grandma grabbed her hard.
May 1:
Evelyn texted: If she keeps acting like this, someone official needs to scare her straight.
Then photographs.
Not graphic.
A red mark on Lily’s wrist.
A broken bedroom door latch.
A child-sized blanket left on the floor of the laundry room.
Then screenshots.
MELISSA:
She only listens when she thinks police are coming.
EVELYN:
Then we should use that.
MELISSA:
Natalie will lose her mind.
EVELYN:
Natalie is the problem. She makes Lily soft.
Officer Daniels read the messages twice.
Then asked:
“Why didn’t you report this sooner?”
Natalie looked down.
May you like
“Because I kept thinking I could handle my own family.”
That answer would haunt her later.
