Chapter 3 - THE VIDEO

By noon, the clip was online.

Caption:

CRAZY GYM MOM TRIES TO THROW DUMBBELL AT TEEN.

The video began with Rachel walking toward the rack.

It did not show Emma falling.

Did not show Tyler’s foot.

Did not show him saying “So what?”

It showed:

crying baby,

angry mother,

raised dumbbell.

Twenty-three seconds.

Enough.

Comments spread quickly.

“Arrest her.”

“Who brings a baby to a weight room?”

“That kid needs CPS.”

“She almost killed him.”

Rachel stared at her phone.

Daniel told her:

“Do not reply.”

Too late.

She typed three angry responses.

Deleted them.

Still screenshot.

Then Tyler’s mother, Melissa Mason, called the gym.

She threatened:

police report,

civil lawsuit,

press,

child-endangerment complaint against Rachel.

Daniel closed his office door.

“Rachel, listen to me.”

“She kicked—”

“He.”

“He kicked my baby.”

“I know.”

“Then why am I the one defending myself?”

“Because the clip is ugly.”

Rachel’s eyes filled.

Emma sat on her lap chewing a soft toy.

Unaffected now.

That almost made it worse.

Then Daniel said:

“We have cameras.”

Rachel looked up.

The gym’s ceiling cameras recorded the family corner.

Full angle.

Tyler.

Emma.

Foot.

Fall.

Then Rachel.

The complete sequence.

Daniel exhaled.

“We have the whole thing.”

Rachel nearly cried from relief.

Then the front-desk employee entered.

“Camera system’s offline.”

Daniel stared.

“What?”

“Storage server rebooted at eleven-thirty.”

“Why?”

“No idea.”

Daniel ran to the office.

The local video archive covering 9:00 to 11:15 was gone.
