Chapter 10 - LILY COMES BACK

Daniel called Lily.

She did not answer.

He left one voicemail.

No defense.

No demand.

“I know enough now to know I didn’t know enough then. I’m sorry.”

Three days later she called.

Her voice sounded familiar and strange.

“Hi, Danny.”

He cried instantly.

She did not.

Not at first.

They spoke for twenty minutes.

Then an hour.

Lily lived two states away.

Married.

No children.

Worked as a physical therapist.

She had built a life Rebecca knew nothing about.

Daniel asked:

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Lily answered:

“I tried once.”

“When?”

“Your first year married to Hannah.”

Daniel froze.

She mailed him a letter.

Rebecca intercepted it.

How did Lily know?

Because Rebecca called her afterward.

“She said if I dragged you into old family lies, she would tell you I was asking for money.”

Daniel stared.

“Were you?”

“No.”

Lily had wanted to warn Hannah.

She had seen wedding photographs.

Saw Rebecca arranging Hannah’s posture.

Recognized the beginning.

Daniel’s stomach turned.

“Why didn’t you contact Hannah directly then?”

“I was scared I’d look obsessed.”

Then:

“And I was tired.”

That mattered too.

Victims are not required to spend adulthood rescuing people from the system they escaped.

Then Daniel asked about the shoe polishing.

Lily laughed once.

Dry.

“That was Mom’s favorite humiliation because it looked harmless.”

She described guests arriving.

Rebecca inspecting shoes.

Lily kneeling with cloth.

If Lily resisted:

“Don’t embarrass me.”

If she cried:

“Stop performing.”

If Thomas intervened:

“You’re teaching her disrespect.”

Daniel asked:

“Did she ever make you work injured?”

Silence.

Then Lily said:

“Yes.”

At nineteen, she sprained her wrist.

Rebecca made her serve a holiday dinner anyway.

Daniel had been home that year.

He remembered Lily wearing a wrist brace.

He also remembered asking her to bring him coffee.
