Chapter 12 - THE RED NOTEBOOK
Rebecca’s condo repair was nearly finished.
Daniel no longer allowed her to stay in his house.
She moved to a hotel temporarily.
With counsel involved, relevant belongings were preserved.
The red notebook existed.
Not one.
Three.
The newest covered her stay with Daniel.
Entries:
Hannah argues about menu.
Noah slow with coats.
Hannah embarrassed me in front of Susan.
Noah cried after correction.
Hannah uses hand injury to avoid work.
Daniel stared.
Then one entry:
Lily contact confirmed. Hannah becoming disloyal.
There it was.
Direct connection.
The dinners intensified after Rebecca learned Hannah believed Lily.
Another:
Must remind Daniel how much easier house runs when expectations are clear.
Rebecca planned to frame the system as efficiency before Daniel returned.
Then:
Noah needs stronger habits before Hannah makes him soft.
Daniel’s anger became colder.
His son was not incidental.
Rebecca intended continuation.
Then an older notebook from Lily’s adolescence surfaced.
Same categories.
Lily lazy after school.
Lily disrespectful at dinner.
Lily refused shoes.
Lily cried to Thomas.
Then one entry:
Daniel appreciates structure. Lily resents it.
Daniel stared.
His mother had used him as evidence against his sister.
He was the good child because he benefited quietly.
Lily was the bad child because she resisted visibly.
Then the final page from years ago:
If Lily leaves, Daniel must understand she chose selfishness over family.
The narrative had been written before Lily actually left.
Rebecca prepared the explanation in advance.
Daniel felt sick.
Then the newest notebook contained another future-tense line:
May you like
If Hannah tells Daniel, explain that injuries made her emotional and Lily has been influencing her.
Rebecca had already prepared the story she would use if exposed.
