Chapter 11 - DANIEL'S PART

Daniel sat alone after the call.
Then told Hannah.
“I asked Lily for coffee.”
Hannah said nothing.
“I saw the brace.”
“You were young.”
“I was twenty-two.”
Hannah looked at him.
Daniel continued:
“I thought she was being dramatic too.”
That admission mattered more than blaming Rebecca completely.
He had benefited from the household hierarchy.
Not designed it.
Not understood its full cruelty.
Benefited.
Lily served.
Daniel sat.
Lily cleaned.
Daniel studied.
Rebecca praised him for ambition.
Then called Lily selfish for wanting to leave.
Daniel asked Hannah:
“Have I ever done that to you?”
She took time.
“Not like your mother.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Hannah looked down at her bandages.
“You sometimes thank me for ‘keeping everything running’ without noticing what running costs.”
Daniel absorbed it.
She continued.
“When your mom started helping, you were relieved.”
“Yes.”
“When I said she was taking over, you said she was trying to make things easier.”
Daniel remembered.
Another echo.
Help interpreted from the helper’s intention, not the receiver’s experience.
Then Hannah said:
“I didn’t tell you how bad it got because every complaint sounded like I was attacking your mother.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Rebecca had not created that fear alone.
His defensiveness helped.
Then Lily agreed to a video call with Hannah.
No dramatic sisterhood.
Just two women comparing notes.
Lily asked:
“Does she still say, ‘Do your job’?”
Hannah stared.
“Yes.”
Lily nodded.
Same phrase.
Decades apart.
Then Lily said something that changed the case again.
“Mom kept a red notebook.”
Daniel frowned.
“What notebook?”
“She wrote down who did what wrong during dinners.”
No notebook had been found in Daniel’s house.
But Rebecca’s condo storage unit had not yet been searched.
Daniel asked:
“Why would she keep records?”
May you like
Lily answered:
“Because she always needed proof that everyone else was the problem.”
