Chapter 5 - THE PEOPLE WHO WATCHED

Daniel called Helen Price.
She came back the next morning.
Not because Rebecca invited her.
Because Daniel did.
Helen had attended several of the dinners.
He asked:
“Why didn’t you say anything?”
Helen looked ashamed.
“At first I thought Hannah wanted to host.”
“And Noah?”
“I thought little chores.”
“Polishing shoes?”
Helen looked away.
That was enough.
Then she said:
“Your mother has always made cruelty look like tradition.”
Daniel flinched.
Helen had seen similar scenes with Lily decades earlier.
Not beatings.
Not obvious injuries.
Work.
Correction.
Humiliation presented as manners.
Rebecca would say:
“In this family, nobody sits before the host sits.”
Or:
“Children serve elders before themselves.”
Or:
“A daughter who can’t manage a home will never manage a life.”
Some guests objected privately.
Rebecca dismissed them.
Others came from families with similar expectations.
They normalized it.
Then Helen said:
“Your father hated it.”
Daniel looked up.
“My dad?”
Thomas Carter had died eight years earlier.
Daniel remembered him as quiet.
Conflict-avoidant.
Helen said:
“He fought with Rebecca about Lily constantly.”
Daniel frowned.
“I never saw that.”
“They didn’t do it in front of you.”
Why?
Because Rebecca said Daniel needed to focus on school.
Thomas once threatened to send Lily to live with his sister.
Rebecca called that “breaking the family.”
He backed down.
Then one night Lily left anyway.
Daniel asked:
“Did Dad know where she went?”
Helen nodded.
Daniel stood.
“What?”
“He knew after about three weeks.”
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
Helen’s eyes filled.
“Because Lily asked him not to.”
Daniel stared.
“Why would she ask that?”
Helen whispered:
“Because she thought you would tell Rebecca.”
Daniel felt the accusation like a physical blow.
Then Helen handed him an envelope.
Thomas had given it to her before he died.
For Daniel.
She had never delivered it.
Why?
Thomas told her:
“Only if Rebecca starts doing it again.”
Daniel’s hands shook as he opened it.

First line:
IF YOUR MOTHER EVER STARTS MAKING HANNAH OR YOUR CHILD SERVE HER THE WAY SHE MADE LILY SERVE, DO NOT TELL YOURSELF IT IS JUST HER PERSONALITY.
