Chapter 9 - THE GUESTS' GROUP CHAT

Helen gave Daniel access to a group chat involving Rebecca’s dinner circle.

Not because she wanted revenge.

Because she had participated.

The messages were ugly mostly through normality.

Rebecca:

Hannah still has no rhythm with formal service.

Margaret Sloan:

Young women aren’t taught anything anymore.

Rebecca:

Noah is better. He actually wants to help.

Helen had reacted with a neutral thumbs-up months earlier.

She cried when Daniel showed her.

“I didn’t think.”

“That’s the point.”

Another guest wrote after seeing Hannah’s bandages:

Should she be working with those hands?

Rebecca:

She needs to stop dramatizing every discomfort.

Nobody challenged that.

Then after the party where Daniel returned:

Margaret Sloan:

That looked bad.

Rebecca:

Daniel is overreacting because Hannah performed for him.

Helen:

No. We saw what happened.

A pause.

Then Helen finally wrote:

We should have stopped it earlier.

That message became a break.

Two guests supported her.

Three left the chat.

Rebecca deleted the group.

But screenshots remained.

Then one older guest, Robert Hale, called Daniel.

He apologized.

“I thought your mother was just strict.”

Daniel asked:

“Would you have let someone make your wife scrub with bandaged hands?”

“No.”

“Then why was Hannah different?”

Robert had no answer.

Status.

Setting.

Rebecca’s certainty.

The fact Hannah kept complying.

People often mistake compliance for consent when resistance is costly.

Then Robert said something else.

“I saw Rebecca slap Lily once.”

Daniel froze.

“When?”

“Your father’s retirement dinner. Lily was seventeen.”

“What happened?”

“She dropped a plate.”

Daniel remembered that night.

Rebecca told everyone Lily had gone upstairs because she was “having one of her moods.”

She had actually been hit and sent away.

Another childhood memory changed shape.
