Chapter 12 - VANESSA'S CHANGE

Vanessa did something no one expected.

She volunteered at Whitmore House Foundation.

Not publicly.

No photographer.

No announcement.

Eleanor assumed it was another performance.

Maybe it was, at first.

Then Vanessa kept showing up.

She worked with:

housing-placement staff,

elder-care grant applicants,

scholarship coordinators.

One afternoon she was assigned intake with a sixty-eight-year-old woman who had worked as a hotel housekeeper for thirty years.

The woman apologized repeatedly for her clothes.

Vanessa stared at her hands.

Older.

Chapped.

Work-worn.

For the first time, Vanessa saw the maid test from outside herself.

After the meeting, she went to the restroom and cried.

No one praised her.

Good.

She did not become a saint.

She remained:

vain,

sharp,

status-conscious,

difficult.

But she stopped treating service workers as invisible.

Eleanor noticed.

May you like

She did not reward it immediately.

That mattered too.
