Chapter 6 - THE PHONE

Eleanor did not confront Sophie.
She hired an independent digital-forensics consultant.
Quietly.
The consultant reviewed:
home network logs,
visitor-camera metadata,
and a device backup Eleanor lawfully had access to through an old shared family account.
Nothing obvious.
Then Marta remembered something.
The day Eleanor visited Sophie in disguise, Sophie carried her phone in a way that seemed unusual.
Inside her sweater pocket.
Camera side outward.
Why?
Sophie always left her phone on tables.
Eleanor asked Daniel directly during dinner:
“Do you remember the maid?”
Daniel took half a second too long.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She was memorable.”
Eleanor smiled.
“Was she?”
Daniel knew immediately he had failed something.
Later that night, Sophie texted him:
She suspects.
Daniel replied:
How much?
Sophie:
Enough.
That text would matter later.
At the time, Eleanor did not see it.
Instead, she watched Sophie at the next trust meeting.
Calm.
Kind.
Attentive.

Still perfect.
Perfection began to irritate her.
