Chapter 2 - THE SECOND DOOR

Sophie lived twenty minutes away.

Not in a mansion.

Still elegant.

Still expensive.

But smaller.

Warmer.

Cream siding.

Hydrangeas.

A brass knocker.

Eleanor remained in disguise.

She knocked three times.

Footsteps approached.

The lock turned.

Sophie opened the door.

Cream sweater.

Elegant trousers.

Hair loosely tied.

She looked at the old maid.

Then smiled.

“Can I help you?”

Eleanor kept her voice rough.

“I was told there might be work.”

Sophie looked surprised.

Then glanced at the weather.

Cold wind.

The maid uniform was thin.

“Come inside.”

Eleanor stepped in.

Sophie did not ask who sent her.

Did not demand references.

That was reckless.

But kind.

Or looked kind.

Daniel, Sophie’s husband, appeared in the hallway.

Dark suit.

Phone in hand.

He gave the maid one quick look.

Something passed across his face.

Too fast for Eleanor to read.

Sophie said:

“She’s looking for work.”

Daniel nodded.

“Okay.”

No contempt.

No laughter.

Eleanor continued the test.

She carried a food tray into the sitting room.

Then deliberately dropped it.

Plate.

Tea.

Bread.

Everything hit the floor.

Sophie moved instantly.

“No, no, don’t.”

She stopped Eleanor from kneeling.

“I’ll do it.”

“You don’t have to.”

“I know.”

Sophie cleaned the mess herself.

Then guided Eleanor to the sofa.

“Sit.”

She brought food.

Covered Eleanor with a blanket.

Eleanor’s eyes filled.

After Vanessa, this felt like rescue.

Too perfect.

But grief makes perfection persuasive.

Before leaving, Eleanor hugged Sophie.

Sophie hugged back.

Warmly.

Eleanor walked out.

The door closed.

Inside, Sophie waited three seconds.

Then her smile vanished.

She pulled a hidden phone from her pocket.

Daniel stepped from the hallway.

“She believed it?”

Sophie looked through the window at Eleanor walking toward the car.

“Every second.”

Then she walked to the dining table.

An inheritance folder sat there.

She slammed it shut.

Daniel exhaled.

“So we’re done?”

Sophie turned.

“No.”

May you like

Her eyes were cold now.

“We’re just ahead.”
