Chapter 4 - THE CLAUSE SOPHIE KNEW ABOUT

Sophie had known about the test for eleven days.

Not because Eleanor told her.

Because Daniel found the clue.

Daniel was not wealthy by Whitmore standards.

He was a corporate attorney.

Good one.

He worked for a firm that had once handled a trust amendment for Whitmore Holdings.

Months earlier, a junior associate accidentally forwarded him an internal scheduling memo.

Subject:

SUCCESSOR OBSERVATION PLAN.

Daniel was not supposed to receive it.

He should have deleted it.

Instead, he read.

The memo referenced:

disguised in-home visits,

behavioral observation,

Vanessa residence,

Sophie residence,

family ring presentation.

Daniel showed Sophie.

At first she panicked.

“This is insane.”

Then she became still.

“When?”

“Probably soon.”

“What exactly does she test?”

“Treatment of someone perceived as low-status.”

Sophie laughed once.

“Of course.”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“We should tell her we saw this.”

Sophie stared at him.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Vanessa will fail.”

Daniel said nothing.

They both knew it.

Then Sophie said:

“And I won’t.”

That was the moment the test stopped being a test.

It became theater.

Sophie arranged everything.

Food tray near the edge.

Blanket folded on the sofa.

Phone hidden.

Daniel positioned in hallway.

She practiced one sentence:

“Come inside.”

Not too warm.

Not too polished.

May you like

Natural.

The part that surprised even Sophie was how easy it felt.
