Chapter 1 - SHE DID

Claire Miller saw the shoes first.
Black flats.
One lying on its side near the stone step.
The other still on Sofia’s foot.
Then she saw her daughter.
Fifteen years old.
Curly brown hair plastered to her face.
Beige top darkened by rain.
Skirt soaked.
Backpack lying several feet away.
Motionless.
“Sofia!”
Claire ran across the courtyard and dropped to her knees so hard the wet stone bruised them.
She pulled Sofia’s upper body into her arms.
“SOFIA! WAKE UP!”
Behind them, under the covered doorway, Mark Miller stood with his arms folded.
Vanessa stood beside him in a tan coat.
Dry.
Claire looked up.
“WHY IS SHE OUT HERE?!”
Mark’s jaw tightened.
“She was punished.”
For one second Claire thought she had misheard him.
“What?”
“She broke the rules.”
Claire looked back at Sofia.
Her face was pale.
Her lips trembled faintly.
Claire brushed soaked hair from her forehead.
“Baby, come on.”
Sofia suddenly gasped.
Her eyes opened halfway.
Then widened.
“Mom?”
“I’m here.”
Sofia grabbed Claire’s coat.
“Don’t leave me.”
“I’m not leaving.”
Claire lifted her head.
“Who did this?”
Sofia’s eyes shifted beyond Mark.
Toward Vanessa.
Her whole body started trembling harder.
One weak finger lifted.
“She did.”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Claire followed Sofia’s hand.
“Her?”
Sofia nodded quickly.
“She locked me out.”
Mark turned sharply toward Vanessa.
“What?”
Vanessa took one step backward.
“She is confused.”
Sofia clutched Claire harder.
“No.”
Claire’s fear became rage.
She eased Sofia against the stone wall, stood, crossed the courtyard, and slapped Vanessa across the face.
Vanessa’s head jerked sideways.
Claire pointed straight at her.
“You did this to my daughter?”
Vanessa touched her cheek.
Mark stared.
Claire turned back toward Sofia.
“Call 911.”
Mark snapped:
“She doesn’t need an ambulance.”
Claire slowly looked at him.
“You found your daughter unconscious in freezing rain and your first instinct is to protect the woman who locked her outside?”
Mark opened his mouth.
Nothing came.
Then Sofia whispered from the wall:
“Mom…”
Claire ran back.
Sofia’s fingers wrapped around her wrist.
May you like
“Please don’t make me stay here.”
That sentence changed the entire custody case.
