Chapter 8 - VANESSA'S DAUGHTER

Vanessa had a daughter too.

Lily.

Nineteen.

Away at college.

Claire expected Lily to defend her mother.

She did not.

When investigators contacted her, Lily cried.

“She did this to me too.”

The room went quiet.

Not exactly the same.

Vanessa’s discipline with Lily had involved:

taking phones,

locking bedroom doors,

withholding rides,

making Lily sit on the porch after arguments.

Lily said:

“She always called it cooling off.”

Mark stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Lily laughed bitterly.

“You thought she was an amazing mom.”

He had.

Vanessa often talked about how well Lily turned out.

College scholarship.

Good grades.

No drugs.

No arrests.

Evidence, in Mark’s mind, that strict parenting worked.

Lily said:

“I turned out okay because I got really good at not needing her.”

That sentence cut through him.

Then Lily said something else.

“When you married her, I thought Sofia would be safer because there’d be another adult.”

Mark looked down.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily shook her head.

“Don’t apologize to me first.”

Good.

Sofia remained the current child.

Lily’s statement also complicated the story in an uncomfortable way.

She did not describe Vanessa as cruel all the time.

“She could be amazing.”

Sofia looked at her.

Lily continued:

“She made every birthday perfect. She remembered teachers’ names. She stayed up when I had the flu.”

That made Sofia cry harder.

Because Vanessa had done those things for her too.

Lily said:

“That’s why it took me so long to call the other stuff wrong.”

Abuse did not require every day to be terrible.

In fact, unpredictability often made control stronger.

Warmth.

Then punishment.

Affection.

Then withdrawal.

The child spent energy trying to recover the good version of the parent.

Sofia whispered:

“I kept thinking if I behaved better, she’d be nice again.”

Lily nodded.

“So did I.”

Neither girl needed Vanessa to be entirely monstrous for the pattern to be harmful.

The past could explain Vanessa’s pattern.

It could not replace the present victim.
