Chapter 3 - THE RULES
Vanessa had rules.
Not house rules in the ordinary sense.
A system.
She called it:
The Accountability Plan.
Mark first heard about it six months earlier.
Sofia had skipped unloading the dishwasher twice.
Vanessa said:
“She needs consistency.”
Mark agreed.
The original plan was simple.
Homework before phone.
Chores before friends.
No disrespect.
Reasonable.
Then Vanessa began adding penalties.
Late to dinner:
phone for one evening.
Rolled eyes:
extra chore.
Talked back:
no weekend plans.
Still within the range of strict parenting.
Then the language changed.
“Refusal.”
“Manipulation.”
“Defiance cycle.”
“Attention-seeking.”
Vanessa kept notes.
Mark liked the notes.
They made conflict feel objective.
One entry:
Sofia refused direct instruction. Consequence: bedroom door open for evening.
Another:
Sofia attempted to bypass consequence by contacting Claire.
Another:
Sofia used tears to avoid accountability.
Mark read the summaries.
He did not see the actual moments.
He worked long hours managing a regional construction company.
Vanessa worked from home.
She became the primary enforcer.
Whenever Mark came home, Vanessa presented the day as a case file.
“She screamed at me.”
“She threatened to leave.”
“She called your ex behind our backs.”
“She lies whenever she gets consequences.”
Sofia told Mark:
“She hates me.”
Mark answered:
“She is trying to parent you.”
Sofia said:
“She takes my phone.”
“Because you break rules.”
“She locks my room.”
“Stop exaggerating.”
Then one night Sofia said:
“I don’t feel safe here.”
Mark became angry.

“Do not use words like that because you’re mad about chores.”
That sentence would haunt him later.
