Chapter 13 - VANESSA'S CONSEQUENCES

The rain incident triggered a child-endangerment investigation.

Vanessa was not charged with attempted murder.

No fantasy.

No serious permanent injury.

But deliberately disabling entry and leaving a minor outside in severe weather for an extended period mattered.

Her prior pattern also informed risk assessment.

A negotiated criminal resolution involved:

probation,

parenting intervention,

no unsupervised contact with minors under specified conditions,

and compliance with court orders.

The slap Claire delivered that night was also addressed.

Claire admitted it.

“I hit her.”

Her attorney advised honesty.

She received a minor assault disposition handled separately.

Claire hated that.

Then accepted it.

Being protective did not make striking someone legally disappear.

She told Sofia:

“I was wrong to hit Vanessa.”

Sofia stared.

“But she deserved it.”

Claire answered:

“Maybe I deserved to be angry.”

Then:

“That doesn’t make hitting the right choice.”

Important.

Otherwise the family would teach Sofia that violence becomes moral depending on who is angrier.
