Chapter 6 - THE SCHOOL NURSE

Sofia’s school nurse had another piece.

Not proof of abuse alone.

Pattern.

Three months earlier Sofia came in with cold hands and wet shoes.

She said she missed the bus.

The nurse gave her dry socks.

Two weeks later:

headache,

had not eaten lunch,

said she forgot money.

Then:

stomach pain,

anxiety before pickup.

The nurse asked:

“Something happening at home?”

Sofia said no.

Then started crying.

The nurse documented it.

She did not interrogate.

She gave Sofia the counselor’s number.

Sofia never went.

Why?

Vanessa had picked her up that afternoon and asked:

“What did you tell the nurse?”

Sofia froze.

“How do you know?”

“The school called about your visit.”

Then:

“Do not turn normal consequences into abuse stories.”

Sofia said she had not.

Vanessa replied:

“Good.”

That one word scared her.

The school also documented three pickup irregularities.

Vanessa arrived more than an hour late.

Once, Sofia sat in the office until 6:10 p.m.

When staff called Mark, Vanessa answered his phone.

She said:

“Traffic.”

Mark never knew.

Again:

not one hidden camera.

A system where information flowed through the same person.

Vanessa controlled:

home access,

some phone access,

pickup communication,

and Mark’s interpretation.

She did not control everything.

She controlled enough.
