Chapter 1 - ONE-EIGHTY

The pawn shop smelled like metal, old carpet, and rain.

Emily Carter stood at the counter with wet hair sticking to her face.

Her cracked iPhone rested between her hands.

The clerk turned it over.

“Screen’s bad.”

“I know.”

“Battery?”

“Still works.”

He tapped a few buttons.

“One-eighty.”

Emily swallowed.

“That’s it?”

“That’s generous.”

Noah’s inhaler prescription flashed through her mind.

Then the memory of him coughing in the night.

“Fine.”

The clerk counted the cash.

Emily took it.

“My son needs his inhaler.”

She shoved the money into her coat pocket and hurried out.

From the back office, Roman Vale had watched the entire exchange.

He was not there to buy electronics.

His investment company owned the retail strip and planned to redevelop it.

The pawn shop lease was one line on a forty-page asset review.

Then Emily said her last name while signing the sale slip.

Carter.

Roman looked again.

After she left, he walked to the counter.

“How much for the phone?”

The clerk laughed.

“You buying cracked iPhones now?”

“This one.”

Roman paid.

The clerk handed it over before resetting.

The screen lit.

A message appeared.

DANIEL:

SELL THE PHONE IF YOU HAVE TO.

Roman’s face hardened.

Another preview appeared.

STOP ASKING ME FOR MONEY. THE BOY HAS INSURANCE.

Roman stared.

“No, he doesn’t.”

The clerk looked up.

“What?”

Roman knew the name Daniel Carter.

Former operations manager.

Now founder of Carter Cold Storage.

Currently under acquisition review.

And two weeks earlier, Roman had seen a benefits document showing Daniel’s dependents were removed from his new executive plan.

Roman grabbed his coat.

Outside, rain hit hard.

By the time he reached Emily’s apartment, Noah was coughing so violently he could barely speak.

Emily stood in the doorway arguing with the landlord.

“Please. He needs his medicine.”

The landlord pointed at a notice.

“No rent, no mercy.”

Emily looked ready to break.

Roman stepped between them.

He handed her a pharmacy bag.

“Give this to your son.”

Emily opened it.

Inhalers.

Her eyes filled.

“I can’t pay you.”

“I didn’t ask.”

Then the cracked phone rang in Roman’s hand.

DANIEL.

Roman answered.

“Did you sell it or not?” Daniel said.

Roman looked at Emily.

“She did.”

Silence.

“And now I’m holding it.”

Daniel stopped breathing for half a second.

May you like

Roman heard it.

That was enough to know the phone contained more than cruelty.
