Chapter 5 - THE BUYER'S PROBLEM
Northway Transport did not want a family lawsuit.
It also did not want to lose Carter Cold Storage.
The company had real value.
Good refrigerated routes.
Long-term grocery contracts.
Modern fleet.
Strong margins.
Daniel had built much of that value.
Emily admitted it.
“He worked constantly.”
Rachel looked at her.
“You don’t need him to be useless for your claim to matter.”
That sentence helped.
Northway paused closing for ten days.
Roman recused himself from direct negotiations because of his personal involvement after buying Emily’s phone.
He appointed outside investment counsel.
Emily noticed.
“You didn’t have to do that.”
“Yes, I did.”
“Why?”
“Because helping you and buying his company cheaper cannot become the same decision.”
For the first time, she trusted one thing about him.
The boundary.
Then Daniel called her through counsel.
He wanted mediation.
Emily agreed.
He arrived in a navy suit.
Tired.
Controlled.
“You’re blowing up the company.”
Emily stared.
“I sold my phone for Noah’s inhaler.”
Daniel looked away.
“I didn’t know it was that bad.”
“You told me to sell it.”
“I thought you were exaggerating.”
“You canceled his insurance.”
“It was an HR transition error.”
Rachel placed the termination request on the table.
Signed electronically by Daniel.
Remove dependents at renewal.
Daniel went quiet.
Then:
“I was switching plans.”
“And never added us back.”
“No.”
Emily leaned forward.
“Why?”
Daniel’s answer came slowly.
“Because I was leaving.”

Then he said:
“I planned to set up separate coverage after filing.”
“You planned a lot of things after.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What do you want?”
Emily answered:
“The truth about my money.”
His jaw tightened.
“That money was a marital contribution.”
“You called it thirty percent.”
“Before the company became what it is.”
“So I own the bad years but not the good ones?”
He had no easy answer.
Then Daniel said something worse.
“You stopped working.”
Emily went still.
“Noah was sick.”
“I know.”
“You asked me to stay home.”
“I know.”
“Then don’t rewrite care as absence.”
