Chapter 7 - THE PAWNED PHONE
The police were not involved.
Not yet.
This was mostly civil.
That surprised Emily.
Forgery had not been proven.
The account transfers involved joint property.
The insurance cancellation created civil and family-law issues.
The ownership dispute belonged in court.
Emily asked Rachel:
“So he can do all this and maybe not go to jail?”
Rachel answered:
“Civil wrongdoing is still wrongdoing.”
Emily had spent too much time watching television.
Real betrayal involved spreadsheets.
Then the phone itself became evidence.
Roman had bought it legally.
But Emily’s cloud account remained logged in when he first saw Daniel’s messages.
His lawyer warned that accessing more could create privacy problems.
So Roman stopped.
The device went to a neutral forensic examiner after Emily gave consent.
That distinction protected the evidence.
The examiner recovered deleted texts.
Daniel to Frank:
If she misses rent, document it. Don’t rescue her with extensions.
Daniel to accountant:
She needs to understand what life costs without me.
Then the line that broke Emily:
Daniel:
If Noah’s medication becomes an issue, she can use urgent care.
Accountant:
That sounds harsh.
Daniel:
She chose not to work.
Emily closed the report.
Roman’s face turned cold.
But he did not speak.
Good.
This was her anger.
Then another deleted message appeared.
Daniel to unknown number:
Once sale closes, I file. I can’t have custody discussion happening while she looks unstable.
Emily’s breathing changed.
Custody.
The financial pressure was not only about the company.
It was also about narrative.
Missed rent.
Sold phone.
Unpaid medical bills.
Then Rachel stopped her.
“None of that automatically makes you an unfit parent.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Emily looked away.
Daniel had succeeded partly because he knew what she feared.
Losing Noah.
Then Roman asked:
“Who is the unknown number?”
The forensic examiner identified it.
Not another woman.
A family-law consultant.
Daniel had been planning the separation for months.
