Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN DANIEL WASN'T LEAVING FOR

Emily expected an affair.

There was one.

But not the way she imagined.

Daniel had been seeing Laura Meyers for four months.

The financial plan started seven months earlier.

The affair came later.

That mattered.

He was not dismantling Emily’s stability because Laura demanded it.

He was doing it because he wanted control over the divorce and acquisition.

Laura did not know Emily was selling possessions.

When approached by counsel, she cooperated.

She produced messages.

Daniel:

Marriage has been dead for years.

Laura:

Does Emily know?

Daniel:

We’re basically separated.

False.

Then:

I’m waiting until the company deal is done.

Laura:

Why?

Daniel:

Cleaner.

Again.

Cleaner.

Emily started to hate that word.

Then Laura revealed Daniel planned to buy a new house after closing.

Noah had a bedroom in the architectural plans.

Emily stared.

“He was planning custody.”

“Yes,” Rachel said.

“Before telling me he wanted a divorce.”

“Yes.”

Then Daniel filed.

Petition for dissolution.

Shared custody request.

Temporary financial orders.

He did not ask for sole custody.

That mattered.

But his filing described Emily as financially dependent and “periodically unable to maintain stable housing.”

Rachel answered with the landlord payments, insurance records, and messages.

The judge ordered temporary support and prohibited either parent from using financial pressure to influence custody.

Daniel’s face changed when that order came down.

For the first time, Emily saw him lose control of timing.

Then Northway’s independent valuation arrived.

Carter Cold Storage:

enterprise value around $15.8 million.

Debt and obligations reduced equity value.

Expected net proceeds:

around $11.6 million.

Emily’s original thirty percent, if recognized fully, would not automatically equal thirty percent of current proceeds because later capital, labor, and restructuring mattered.

Her experts proposed a range.

Daniel’s experts proposed lower.

The gap was huge.

Then Rachel found one final handwritten note in Emily’s old laptop bag.

Daniel’s writing:

Emily 30% founder interest until outside financing changes cap table.

Outside financing had never changed it.

Daniel had.
