Chapter 13 - DANIEL'S SECOND LIFE
Daniel moved into a condominium closer to Northway headquarters.
He and Laura did not last.
Emily learned that from Noah, not gossip.
“Dad says Laura moved out.”
Emily said:
“Okay.”
That was all.
Daniel began co-parenting counseling because the court wanted communication repaired.
He remained Noah’s father.
Emily hated how complicated that was.
Daniel could be cruel to her and still love Noah.
He could fail Noah badly and still be capable of becoming a better parent.
The court did not ask Emily to decide his entire future alone.
Good.
Then Daniel apologized directly to Noah for the insurance lapse.
Age-appropriate.
“I should have made sure your medicine was covered.”
Noah asked:
“Why didn’t you?”
Daniel looked at Emily.
Then answered:
“Because I was thinking about grown-up problems and I made a bad choice.”
Not perfect.
True enough.
Emily allowed the answer to stand.
Then Daniel’s regulatory trouble from the acquisition disclosures continued.
Northway’s counsel referred his false no-spousal-claim certification for professional review.
No criminal conviction appeared.
But Daniel lost a planned executive role with Northway.
He remained wealthy.
Not untouchable.
Roman’s investment group issued a revised policy requiring material founder-spouse contributions to be separately disclosed in future acquisitions.
Roman told Emily.
“You changed policy.”
She shook her head.
“Daniel did.”
Roman considered.
“Fair.”
Then he asked if she wanted dinner.
Emily said no.
Two weeks later, she asked him for coffee.
Her choice.
That distinction mattered.
They went.
