Chapter 10 - THE CRIMINAL CASE

Vanessa’s assault case moved forward.

No attempted murder.

No invented fetal injury.

The prosecution had:

Elena’s statement,

Daniel’s eyewitness account for part of the incident,

kitchen security footage,

staff witnesses,

medical documentation of mild injuries.

Vanessa accepted a negotiated plea.

Consequences included:

probation,

a short custodial component,

anger intervention,

no-contact restrictions with Elena,

and restitution for medical and lost-work costs.

At sentencing Vanessa apologized.

Then made the mistake of saying:

“I thought my family was being destroyed.”

The judge asked:

“By whom?”

Vanessa looked at Elena.

Then stopped herself.

“By change.”

Better.

The judge said:

“Change is not an assailant.”

Elena gave a brief statement.

“You called my baby filth before you knew who the father was.”

Vanessa looked down.

“That matters more to me than what you did after you found out.”

Because the reveal should not create dignity retroactively.

Elena continued:

“My child did not become worthy because he belongs to Adrian.”

Silence.

“He was worthy when you thought he belonged to nobody important.”

That became the line reporters repeated.

Elena hated seeing it online.

But she stood by it.
