Chapter 7 - VANESSA’S DEFENSE
Vanessa hired attorney Rachel Morgan.
Her legal defense focused narrowly.
She admitted:
slapping Elena,
shoving her,
taking the ring.
She denied intending harm to the pregnancy.
The medical evidence supported no direct serious injury to the fetus.
She argued:
extreme emotional provocation,
belief that family property had been stolen,
and suspicion of marital betrayal.
None justified assault.
But they explained state of mind.
Then she challenged the workplace allegations.
Schedules changed because staff coverage changed.
Some comments were rude but not illegal.
The chair removal was disputed.
Meal disposal involved improperly stored food, she claimed.
Rachel was good.
She separated:
criminal conduct,
employment conduct,
family conflict,
and rumor.
That prevented the story from becoming one giant accusation.
Then Vanessa said something important in family mediation.
“I thought Elena was sleeping with Daniel.”
Daniel answered:
“So you attacked her?”
“No.”
Vanessa looked at Elena.
“I hated her before that.”
Honest.
“Why?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“Because Adrian changed when he started seeing someone.”
Elena stared.
Vanessa continued.
“He stopped asking my opinion.”
There.
Not romance.
Sibling possession.
Adrian had always been Vanessa’s protector after their mother died.
He reviewed contracts.
Fixed emergencies.
Took her calls.
Then he began saying:
“I can’t tonight.”
“I have plans.”
“Ask Daniel.”
Vanessa did not know Elena was the reason.
She only knew someone had displaced her.
Then when Adrian said the relationship ended, Vanessa felt relief.
But he never fully returned.
