Chapter 14 - VANESSA RETURNS TO THE FAMILY

Three years after the assault, Vanessa saw Adrian for the first time outside lawyers and court.
At Charles’s seventy-second birthday.
Elena did not attend.
Her choice.
Mateo stayed with her.
Vanessa asked Adrian:
“Does he know about me?”
“He’s three.”
“That’s not an answer.”
Adrian sighed.
“He knows I have a sister named Vanessa.”
She looked down.
“Does Elena hate me?”
“Ask Elena.”
“I can’t.”
“Then live with not knowing.”
Harsh.
Fair.
Then Vanessa said:
“I still think you handled everything terribly.”
Adrian laughed once.
“I did.”
That surprised her.
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“You made me think the relationship ended.”
“Yes.”
“You let me look like an idiot.”
“No.”
Vanessa stared.
Adrian continued:
“You made yourself look like an idiot when you decided class gave you permission to degrade someone.”
Silence.
Then softer:
“But I gave you a lie to build around.”
That was the family’s final accountability.
No one made Vanessa violent.
But multiple people fed a secrecy structure where assumptions grew unchecked.
Vanessa said:
“I’m trying to understand who I was.”
Adrian answered:
“Start with who you want to be when nobody is afraid of you.”
She looked at him.

That sounded like Daniel.
Maybe it was.
