Chapter 9 - WORK AND LOVE
Elena resigned from the Hart estate.
Not because Daniel fired her.
Not because Vanessa demanded it.
Because the house no longer felt safe.
Daniel offered severance far above contract.
Elena accepted only:
accrued wages,
contractual leave,
and a modest transition payment negotiated through counsel.
She did not want a fortune that made the relationship with Adrian look purchased.
Then she found a position managing breakfast service at a boutique hotel.
Less pay initially.
More responsibility.
Closer to the café dream.
Adrian offered to invest in a future café.
Elena said:
“Not now.”
He accepted.
Good.
Then Elena asked him to attend prenatal appointments.
Sometimes.
Not all.
Fatherhood was not romantic access.
He had rights and responsibilities.
The relationship itself was separate.
They began couples counseling before deciding whether to resume dating.
At one session, Elena said:
“You kept saying you were protecting me from your family.”
Adrian nodded.
“You protected yourself from conflict.”
He looked down.
“Yes.”
Then:
“And you made me carry the secrecy.”
“Yes.”
That admission mattered more than another apology.
Then the counselor asked Elena:
“Do you want to be with him?”
She answered:
“I don’t know.”
No forced romance because baby.
Adrian’s return did not repair public perception either.
Once the story leaked, gossip split immediately.
Some people called Elena:
the maid who trapped a billionaire.
Others called Adrian:
the heir who impregnated an employee.
Both flattened the relationship into power.
Elena hated both versions.
So did Adrian.
Then Daniel’s attorney advised them not to issue a romantic statement.
Good.
Instead, Adrian released only what was necessary:
He and Elena had been in a consensual relationship for more than a year before the pregnancy. He acknowledged paternity and responsibility. Employment decisions at the Hart estate were controlled by the Hart household, not him.
No declarations of forever.
No photographs.
No engagement announcement.
Elena approved the wording because it protected one important boundary:
May you like
The baby could be acknowledged without turning the mother into property of the father.
Adrian had to live with uncertainty.
