Chapter 13 - THE CAFÉ

Two years later, Elena opened a breakfast café.
Not with Adrian’s money.
Not entirely alone either.
She used:
savings,
a small-business loan,
a grant for first-time food entrepreneurs,
and a modest investment from her sister Sofia.
Adrian offered again.
Elena said no again.
Not because his money was dirty.
Because she needed one thing built outside the relationship.
The café was called:
MORNING TABLE.
Eight tables.
Coffee.
Egg sandwiches.
Cornmeal pancakes.
No luxury.
It did well.
Not instantly.
The first winter was hard.
Then a local review helped.
Adrian came with Mateo on Sundays.
Sometimes cleaned high chairs.
Customers occasionally recognized him.
Elena hated when they stared.
Then one woman whispered:
“Isn’t that the billionaire?”
Elena answered:
“He’s also blocking the sugar station.”
Adrian moved.
Good.
Their relationship slowly resumed after Mateo’s first birthday.
Not marriage yet.
Then Adrian asked Elena one evening:
“Do you still have my mother’s ring?”
“Yes.”
He blinked.
She had never returned it permanently.
Only stopped wearing it.
“Why keep it?”
Elena looked at him.
“Because it belonged to someone. Not because it promised something.”
That was where they were.

Possibility.
Not destiny.
