Chapter 3 - DANIEL’S MISTAKE

Daniel knew Elena was pregnant with Adrian’s child.
He did not know Vanessa had begun abusing her.
That distinction mattered.
But it did not excuse everything.
When Adrian first confided in him, Daniel said:
“She cannot keep working in the house while Vanessa thinks the relationship ended.”
Adrian agreed.
He offered Elena:
a paid leave,
an apartment,
full medical costs,
and salary through the birth.
Elena refused the apartment.
“I already have one.”
She refused to stop working immediately.
“I’m pregnant. I’m not incapable.”
Daniel respected that.
Too easily.
Then Elena asked only one thing:
“Don’t let anyone treat me like I’m being hidden because I’m embarrassing.”
Daniel promised.
Then did exactly what secrecy always risks doing.
He let other people define the silence.
Vanessa noticed Daniel checking whether Elena had eaten.
Saw him reduce her heavy-duty assignments.
Saw him tell the house manager she could sit during prep work.
Vanessa misread all of it.
She began asking:
“Why do you care so much about her?”
Daniel answered:
“Because she’s pregnant.”
True.
Incomplete.
Then Vanessa once said:
“Women like that know how to make rich men feel responsible.”
Daniel told her to stop.
He did not explain why the statement was especially dangerous.
He thought Adrian had only days left before returning.
Then Adrian’s trip extended again.
Daniel considered telling Vanessa himself.
Adrian begged him not to.
“I need to tell her.”
Daniel agreed.
Again.
Now, after seeing Elena on the kitchen floor, Daniel understood the cost of every delay.
A secret intended to protect Adrian’s timing had placed Elena inside an information vacuum.
Vanessa filled it with suspicion.
Then Elena’s obstetrician called from the hospital.
The baby’s heart rate was reassuring.
No placental injury detected.
No premature labor at that moment.
Elena had bruising and soreness.
She would be observed.
Daniel sat in the hallway.
Vanessa had been taken separately for police questioning.
Then Elena looked at him.
“You knew she hated me.”
Daniel answered:
“Yes.”
“Did you know she thought I was sleeping with you?”
He went still.
“No.”
Elena laughed bitterly.
“She asked me last week.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Another warning no one had brought directly to him.
Then Elena said:
“I didn’t tell you because Adrian said the secret would be over soon.”

The same excuse.
Different mouth.
